Slate is a turtle that helped the rabbits of Watership Down trick Vervain into making everyone think he was mad in order to discredit his accusations against Campion. Pipkin tells Slate to let Ruffle sit on his back to make it appear as if she were swimming, as it was said in the series that moorhens do not swim. He is only featured in one episode of the Watership Down TV series, “The Great Game."
He appears to be friends with Pipkin.
Trivia
- Pond turtles have not lived in Great Britain for 4000 years. Reintroduction efforts did not begin until the 21st century, making Slate's presence highly anachronistic.
- In real life, moorhens are water birds that spend most of their time swimming or wading. Realistically, Ruffle would be able to swim without Slate's help.
