Scabious was mentioned when Holly was telling his story to the rabbits of Watership Down about how Sandleford Warren was destroyed by humans.
Watership Down (Book)
Scabious killed by humans.
Holly explained that Scabious was killed when the men shot and hit him, but he mentioned that Scabious might've been so confused by the gas that he didn't feel the pain. Pipkin was tormented by the thought of Scabious being killed for nothing.
There is also another Scabious, son of Clover and Holly, which Holly apparently named after the original Scabious. He and his siblings were being trained by Bigwig at the end of the book. He was training them how to get around a cat but Scabious wanted to hear some stories instead.
Miniseries
In the miniseries adaptation, Scabious is seen with Toadflax stopping Fiver from eating sow thistle. When confronted by Hazel, Toadflax tells him that sow thistle is for Owsla only and laughs cruelly with Scabious; as Hazel and Fiver leave defeated. He also possibly appeared when Hazel and his escapees are running away, and the second episode when Holly was seen in a flashback trying to escape the warren.
Trivia
- Scabious is a type of flower, named because it was used in traditional medicine to treat scabies.
